Motorbike accident abroad
As all bikers know, riding a motorcycle can be a thrilling experience. There’s an added attraction however by combining it with a trip abroad, either as a holiday or perhaps to enjoy motorcycle touring with a group of other riders.
What happens if I have a motorbike accident abroad?
With the promise of fantastic weather, stunning scenery and quiet roads, continental Europe has lots to offer UK bikers looking for adventure, but what happens if you have an accident abroad on your motorbike? Are you still able to make a claim if the accident wasn’t your fault?
Riding in a foreign country can introduce new challenges for inexperienced riders and it's important to make yourself aware of the local road laws that apply to motorcyclists in the country in which you plan to ride.
If you have a motorbike accident abroad that wasn’t your fault and suffer an injury, the idea of going through the claim process may be off putting, but there are ways of going about it.
For example, if you have been riding as part of an organised motorcycle trip it may be possible to claim against the tour company who hosted you.
If the accident occurs in Europe, the rider can make a claim under the 4th EU Motor Directive, which allows people who have been injured in a road traffic accident to claim compensation.
If, however, you have had an accident in a country outside of the EU, it may be best to speak to your insurance company or seek advice from your nearest British Embassy.
It’s important to remember when making a claim for a motorbike accident abroad, that the laws in Europe regarding time limits are different to the UK, so it’s important that any claims are made straight away to avoid being time barred.
