Yes, you may still be able to claim compensation after a hit and run, even if the driver responsible cannot be identified. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau is the organisation that deals with claims involving uninsured or untraced drivers. Many hit and run claims go through the MIB when the driver cannot be identified.

The length of a hit and run claim depends on factors including the severity of your injuries, the evidence available, whether the driver is identified and whether liability is disputed. More serious claims can take longer because medical evidence and your future needs may need to be fully assessed. 
 

For personal injury claims, you will usually have three years from the date of the collision to bring a claim. There can be exceptions, including claims involving children or people who lack mental capacity. It’s important to seek advice as soon as possible rather than assuming you have plenty of time. 

Useful evidence can include the police report, photographs of the scene and your injuries, CCTV or dashcam footage, witness details, medical records and proof of any financial losses. Any information about the vehicle involved can also help.

Yes. If you’re involved in a collision and the other driver does not provide their details,  you must report the accident to the police within 24 hours.. If you’re considering an MIB claim following a hit and run, the collision needs to have been reported before the claim is submitted. 

You may still be able to claim compensation even if you think you were partly responsible for the collision. In these situations, any compensation awarded may be reduced to reflect your level of responsibility.
