You Be the Judge: Crime & Punishment – Our Clients Story Acts as a Stark Reminder of the Cost of Dangerous Driving
By Sarah Ouko, Solicitor at Fletchers Solicitors and Trustee of Frankie and Neeve’s Road Safety Academy
Yesterday Channel 5 aired a powerful and thought-provoking documentary, You Be the Judge: Crime & Punishment. The programme invited the public to take part in a social experiment — to consider real-life criminal cases and decide for themselves what sentence they would hand down, before comparing it to the actual judgment delivered in court.
Among the stories shared was that of our client, Calvin Buckley, who featured as one of the programme’s contributors. His case is both tragic and deeply personal — involving the devastating incident that claimed the life of his partner Frankie and their unborn daughter Neeve, and left two other family members with life-changing injuries. The driver responsible had been travelling at over 100mph on the motorway while filming himself, yet the sentence he received sparked disbelief and outrage among most viewers and participants in the programme.
While Fletchers Solicitors were not involved in the criminal proceedings, we have had the privilege of representing Calvin and the family in the civil claim — helping to secure their future in the wake of unimaginable loss. The airing of this documentary brought home, once again, how serious and life-altering road traffic offences can be, and how the outcomes of criminal proceedings do not always reflect the public’s expectations of justice.
As a Trustee of Frankie and Neeve’s Road Safety Academy, a charity Calvin helped to establish in memory of Frankie and Neeve, I see first-hand the passion and commitment that goes into raising awareness about road safety — especially among young people. The charity’s work focuses on education and prevention, aiming to stop tragedies like this from happening to others.

Programmes like You Be the Judge serve a vital role in opening up conversations about justice, sentencing, and the real cost of road crimes. They allow us to reflect not only on the legal process, but also on the human stories behind the headlines — stories like Calvin’s, which continue to resonate long after the cameras stop rolling. If you haven’t yet seen You Be the Judge: Crime & Punishment, I urge you to watch it on catch-up here. It’s a powerful piece of television — and a poignant reminder of why road safety, accountability, and support for victims must always remain a priority.
