Case Study – The Jeremy Parker Litigation

The Background

Jeremy Parker, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, practiced at Colchester Hospital under the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and in a private capacity at Oaks Hospital, part of Ramsay Health Care UK. His reputation began to unravel in October 2018 when both institutions referred him for investigation due to concerns over his clinical practice. Interim sanctions were placed on Mr Parker, restricting his ability to operate, followed by his suspension in February 2019. After a thorough investigation by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), he was erased from the medical register in February 2023.

The MPTS found Jeremy Parker had:

• Failed to obtain adequate consent from numerous patients prior to surgery.
• Not discussed non-operative treatment options or explained the rationale for surgical procedures.
• Inadequately documented patient care and failed to make appropriate diagnoses before performing surgeries.
• Retrospectively added pre-typed operation notes and acted dishonestly by falsifying patient records to deceive external auditors.

The Impact on Patients

Since the investigation began, Fletchers Solicitors has received over 190 inquiries from patients who experienced unnecessary or substandard surgeries under Mr Parker’s care. The value of the claims varies widely, with some patients suffering life-changing consequences—including amputation—due to negligent treatment. Many patients felt abandoned, unsure of where to turn, as their complaints were ignored or mishandled by the Trust and Ramsay Health Care UK.

One of our clients, ML, serves as a poignant example of the impact caused by Mr Parker’s malpractice. ML, who suffers from a genetic condition that predisposed her to needing a hip replacement, underwent surgery with Mr Parker in 2016. What should have been a routine procedure quickly turned into a painful ordeal. Post-operative complications were dismissed by Dr. Parker as normal, despite persistent pain and swelling. Even after a revision surgery in 2018, her condition worsened.

In 2019, after Parker’s suspension, ML was rushed to A&E and diagnosed with acute limb ischemia. It was only then that the true extent of the damage caused by her surgeries became clear. ML required multiple corrective surgeries and has since faced lifelong physical impairments.

As we investigated ML’s case, it became apparent that her experience was far from unique. There were deep-rooted concerns about Jeremy Parker’s practice, which had been overlooked for years. We began reaching out to others who had undergone surgery under his care, and soon, we were representing dozens of clients. Many, like ML, had been left with serious and often permanent injuries.
