Missed Breast Cancer Screenings: A Preventable Tragedy

The recent announcement by NHS England that some women at Very High Risk of breast cancer were not contacted for annual MRI screenings is deeply concerning. On March 4th, NHS England wrote to 1,487 women who had been identified as not being on the correct Very High Risk pathway for annual breast cancer screenings. These women had received radiotherapy treatment to the chest for Hodgkin lymphoma between 1962 and 2003, which significantly increases their risk of developing breast cancer. Since 2003, NHS guidance has recommended that these women receive annual MRI scans to detect cancer as early as possible. However, due to inconsistencies in the referral process, many of these women were never placed on the correct screening pathway.

The consequences of this failure are stark: of the affected women, 647 have since been diagnosed with breast cancer, with at least 113 deaths recorded. While not all of these cases can be directly attributed to the missed screenings, earlier detection could have altered outcomes for some of these women.

In response, NHS England has assured that all affected women will be offered an urgent MRI scan within the next three months and that the referral process will be reviewed to prevent future failures.
