Investigation into Dr Yaser Jabbar at Great Ormond Street

Great Ormond Street Hospital’s investigation into orthopaedic treatment provided to 721 children by Mr Yaser Jabbar, yet again raises concerns about patient safety and how patients are still being harmed. 

Mr Yaser Jabbar was the subject of an investigation by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) who found that there was no justification for surgeries which were of no benefit.   Reviews of medical records by the RCS found that Mr Jabbar had caused “serious harm” to his patients. 

GOSH commenced their investigation regarding the surgeon some time ago and first wrote to families at the beginning of the year to advise that an investigation was being undertaken.

It has been reported that the “Former consultant surgeon, has been described by colleagues as “cavalier” and “blasé” and the department as “dysfunctional”.

It is also reported that families of the young patients tried to raise concerns repeatedly through the official complaints procedure. 

Sadly the words “dysfunctional” appear far too often in cases where there have been systemic failures in care and management leading to patient harm.

15 September 2025 Update

The Royal College of Surgeon (RCS) review and investigation into Paediatric Orthopedic Services at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Mr Yaser Jabbar and his treatment of patients across a number of hospitals, remains ongoing and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

An initial review was initiated by GOSH which was to take into account potentially over 700 cases with multiple children being deemed as ‘having suffered harm’ potentially leading to life long disabilities as a result of the care received.

As of 25 July 2025, 588 patients have now been considered, with the reviews being completed by External Experts who have look at patients in order of clinical priority. GOSH have confirmed that this activity is progressing as planned and targets completion by the end of 2025.

However, as part of this work, GOSH have now decided to review an additional cohort of patients who were initially considered but it was then determined there was no significant clinical involvement from Mr Jabbar.

GOSH have now confirmed that they are now also identifying patients where Mr Jabbar OR his Resident Doctors are listed within the electronic medical records. This means that there may be additional patients who have suffered harm, physical or psychological as a result of treatment provided by Mr Jabbar or his Resident Doctors.

The Trust have acknowledged that this investigation may have caused physical and psychological harm to anyone affected and with a wider range of patients now being reviewed; this harm will be ongoing.

The GMC’s website indicates the orthopaedic surgeon was made the subject of certain conditions on January 4 – which included having a clinical supervisor at all times and seeking approval from the GMC before beginning work in a non-NHS post or setting.
