Comment: It’s time to take sepsis more seriously

A Fletchers Solicitors Litigation Executive, believes those affected by Sepsis must speak out against the ‘hidden killer.’

Only last week, the London Evening Standard reported that a mum-of-two died after doctors misdiagnosed sepsis as muscle pain.

A team member from Fletchers’ Medical Negligence department, argues things must change.

These failures appear to be all too prevalent in recent years and the devastating consequences of a misdiagnosis can be tragic.

It can only be hoped that with more attention drawn to these matters substandard care such as this will not happen again, and lessons will be learned.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is triggered by common infections and normally develops because of an over-reactive immune system.

The initial infection could come from anywhere – even a contaminated cut or insect bite.

Why are there delays to sepsis treatment?

There are big concerns around delays to sepsis treatment.

New research by the BBC shows that a quarter of Sepsis patients wait longer than the targeted hour for an antibiotic drip.

As a result, the Sepsis Trust believes that there are about 250,000 Sepsis cases each year in the UK leading to more than 50,000 deaths.

Dr Ron Daniels, of the UK Sepsis Trust, backs Daniel’s concerns.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the Sepsis expert said the research is “concerning.”

Furthermore, that the one-hour window is essential to increasing a patient’s chances of survival.

In conclusion, Daniel said.

The recent news also stresses the importance of the need to pursue a claim.

If you, or a loved one, have suffered because of negligent treatment in relation to Sepsis, we advise you speak with us today and make your claim.
