Andrew Hesketh

As one of our Heads of Clinical Negligence, I oversee our Liverpool-based legal team, supporting them to meet objectives and progress claims effectively. With 26 years’ experience, I have a particular specialism in litigated cases and the litigation process. I also chair a monthly Litigation Clinic, providing guidance and support to colleagues handling complex litigated matters.

I have experience across a range of clinical negligence claims, including complex birth injury and cerebral palsy cases. I find real fulfilment in representing clients facing challenging circumstances, helping them seek answers, recognition and, where appropriate, apologies for events beyond their control. Supporting clients through their journey and seeing their circumstances improve over time is incredibly rewarding.

Throughout my career, I’ve taken pride in making a difference in my clients’ lives, particularly for those living with life-changing injuries. By helping clients adapt, rebuild and improve their quality of life, I aim to make a lasting positive impact. My commitment to supporting clients through difficult times is central to how I approach every case.

I’ve always been motivated by trying to make a positive difference to the lives of those who come to us for help. Many clients are often at a low point in their lives, feeling let down by those they trusted, and are looking for answers and support in rebuilding their future. Being able to provide that guidance, whether through securing answers, financial support or a path forward, is the most rewarding part of my role.

In my management role, I’m equally passionate about supporting others to develop and progress. As the first and only person in my family to pursue a career in law, I’m committed to creating opportunities for those who may never have considered a legal career, helping them to build confidence and realise their potential.

I pride myself on being a good listener and my door is always open for both clients and colleagues. I aim to provide clear, constructive advice and thoughtful feedback, helping to create a positive and supportive working environment where people feel valued and encouraged to grow.

This approach naturally carries through to my client work, where I place real importance on listening carefully, understanding individual needs and offering straightforward, supportive advice at every stage. I am highly motivated, driven and hard-working, and I apply that focus to achieving the best possible outcomes for my clients while ensuring they feel fully supported throughout their case.

My client underwent emergency surgery after an NHS Trust failed to diagnose a blood clot, leading to ischaemic bowel and the removal of a large portion of his bowel. He required ICU care and later developed a severe, inoperable incisional hernia, causing lifelong care needs and significant impact on daily living. Although breach of duty was admitted, the claim was strongly defended before settling at mediation for £294,000. The damages meant the client could fund care and equipment to regain some independence.

We represented the parents of a young child who tragically lived for only 24 hours after catastrophic clinical failings during the mother’s labour and delivery. Crucially, we were able to uncover the answers they had been seeking – information the Trust had initially failed to provide. This was hugely important in helping the clients understand the circumstances of their devastating loss.

We also worked on a claim on behalf of the Estate of a man who tragically died on holiday due to a failure in the weeks before this. An NHS Trust failed to diagnose a myocardial infarction and provide appropriate treatment, leading to a further, more significant myocardial infarction occurring that sadly caused his death. Liability was initially denied, and court proceedings pursued, before the claim was successfully resolved for the client and the estate. It was important for the family that the Trust accepted some level of accountability for what happened and this was just as significant as any compensation settlement.

I work within a team with a great mix of personalities and strengths, which makes a real difference to how we work together. Everyone brings something different to the table, with their own areas of expertise and interests. It means we can support each other and draw on a wide range of knowledge to get the best results for our clients.

I’ve always enjoyed the culture and working environment at Fletchers – it’s a genuinely nice place to work, and people are always welcoming, approachable and willing to help.

I find it particularly rewarding to support teams in achieving great outcomes for our clients and seeing colleagues grow and develop along the way. It’s especially satisfying when we can promote from within and watch people progress in their careers.

Outside of work, I have a loving and supportive partner and two children, Max and Freddie, and they’re the most important things in my life. I’m a huge sports fan and love Football and Rugby League in particular. I have a season ticket at Everton FC and am a regular attender at St Helens RLFC. I’m also a runner – having competed in marathons, half-marathons and 10K events.
