The moment everything changed for John

In 2020, John was working as a delivery driver when a tote box handle snapped as he lifted it, puncturing the back of his right hand. What initially appeared to be a minor injury quickly became something far more serious.

A devastating chain of medical complications followed, ultimately leading to a below-hand amputation in March 2021 – a life-changing moment that forced John to rethink every aspect of his daily life, identity and future.

When John came to Fletchers in 2023, he had already endured years of uncertainty and adjustment. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained determined to regain his independence and continue living life on his own terms. Our focus was clear: to help John access the support, rehabilitation and financial security he needed not just to move forward, but to thrive.

Working closely with John and his rehabilitation team, we helped secure access to a specialist prosthetic trial. The results were transformative. The prosthetic opened new possibilities for John, restoring confidence and enabling him to return to the activities that bring him joy and purpose.

In September 2025, his case settled for a substantial award, providing long-term financial security and ensuring he can continue to access advanced prosthetics, rehabilitation and support for years to come.

But John’s story is about far more than a legal outcome.

Driven by determination and an extraordinary outlook, John refused to let his injury define him. Today, he continues to rebuild his life with energy and ambition; from returning to the gym and taking part in water sports, to maintaining his involvement with Crufts. In 2024, he even took to the stage at our conference to speak about his world-record achievement for lifting the heaviest weights using a prosthetic, inspiring others with his resilience and drive.

John has also channelled his experience into supporting others. He remains actively involved with amputee charities and is currently writing a children’s book about his journey, offering encouragement and hope to young people adjusting to limb loss.

John’s journey reflects what is possible with the right support, specialist rehabilitation and long-term planning in place. His settlement has not only provided financial security but it has helped him continue building a life filled with purpose, achievement and independence.
