Government statistics reveal progress, but the risk remains: From 2004 to 2023, fatalities dropped by 46% from 585 to 315, but there’s still work to be done. Between 2019 and 2023, an average of six motorcyclists lost their lives weekly, with 102 seriously injured. Our recent infographic highlights critical data, including incident hotspots, road hazards, and key statistics showing that over a third of motorcycle fatalities occur in collisions with other vehicles. Most frequently, these incidents involve the other driver failing to look properly.

Encouraging awareness on the road: It has been over a decade since the original ‘Think Bike’ campaign launched, and its message is still highly relevant. Simple habits, like displaying the campaign’s yellow stickers on vehicles and teaching children to look out for bikes, can help spread awareness. For many, learning basic motorcycle skills – like those taught in CBT courses – can make a lasting impact. In fact, completing my own CBT course changed the way I drive, helping me become more aware of motorcyclists. Likewise, for riders themselves, learning how to ride more safely in groups can be just as impactful.

Additionally, the Fatal Accidents Act 1976 allows dependents of the deceased to seek compensation for financial losses due to their dependency on the deceased, bereavement damages, and reimbursement for funeral expenses if paid by the dependents. The statutory bereavement award applies to a select few, while dependency claims are more widely available to close family members, such as:

• Spouse or civil partner
• Former spouse or civil partner
• Person living with the deceased for two years or more
• Parent or individual treated as a parent by the deceased
• Child or individual treated as a child by the deceased’s family
• Siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, or nephews of the deceased
