Getting the most out of your track day

Since making his racing debut in 2002, Christian has established himself as one of the top competitors in British Superbikes, currently ranked #21. He races as part of the AJN Steelstock Kawasaki Squad, showcasing his skill and dedication on the national stage. 

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced track rider, track days are a highlight in the biker calendar. We chatted to British Superbike Racer, Christian Iddon, to get his top tips for a successful track day. 

Preparation is Key  

Preparation can make all the difference on your first track day. Mistakes are often made due to rushing, so give yourself a head-start and prepare your bike, kit and any food well in advance. If you get the opportunity, visit the track the day before – many tracks will allow you to store your bike overnight, which can make for a calmer start to your day. 

Make sure your bike is track-ready. This includes checking the tyres are in good condition, and your chain is well lubricated. You should also make sure mirrors are folded or taped, as this is often a requirement.  

Gear-Up for Safety  

The correct safety gear is essential for your track day, including helmet, boots, gloves and leathers. Make sure your leathers are in good condition without any holes or splits and, if it’s a two-piece, they’ll need to be fully zipped together to meet requirements. A back protector is also required by most organisers.  

Helmets should meet modern safety standards, and you might want to consider getting a replacement if yours is over three years old. While airbag suits aren’t mandatory for track days, they’re highly recommended for the protection they can offer. 

Choose your Track Wisely  

Track days allow you to explore your bike’s capabilities in a safe and controlled environment, but not every track day is the same. While some of the cheaper track days might seem attractive, there are often more riders on the track, and it can be a less personalised experience. So, if you’re after a quieter track, and more one-on-one advice, consider doing some research to find the right fit for you.    

Consider Coaching  

A great way to start your track-riding journey is to opt for a coach-led track day.  While many bikers are eager to push their bike to its limits on the track, a coach will help you do this safely, equipping you with the skills and confidence needed for a successful motorcycle track day.  

As well as coaches, on a track day, you’re likely to meet plenty of on-site professionals, such as mechanics and tyre specialists, who can offer sound advice on a range of areas. Use their expertise and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.   

Focus Forward 

Finally, remember to ride at a pace that feels comfortable for you and don’t worry about other riders overtaking. Focus on looking forward and maintaining your line, as it’s the overtaker’s responsibility to manoeuvre safely past you. 

While collisions are rare, they’re often caused by speed differences, so take your time to build confidence and skill gradually.
