A Medical Practitioners Tribunal hearing, which took place between June and August 2023, reviewed claims that he failed to provide good clinical care to multiple patients between 2014 and 2018.

Additionally, allegations were raised regarding the incorrect coding of procedures for financial gain, resulting in improper payments. These concerns led to restrictions being placed on his practice by the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2022, limiting his work to North Bristol NHS Trust under strict supervision.

Patient Safety Concerns and Hospital Reviews

In 2019, Spire Bristol Hospital revoked Mr Hutchinson’s practising privileges and initiated an internal review into his treatment of patients. Following this, a number of former patients received letters confirming that the review had found their care was inappropriate and had led to harm.

North Bristol NHS Trust also commissioned an external investigation by the Royal College of Surgeons. The findings of this review have now been published, and patients whose cases were reviewed anonymously are being contacted with details of the investigation’s conclusions. This review has confirmed that some patients experienced harm due to inappropriate treatment by Mr Hutchinson.
