Comment: Hard-working professionals at stroke risk

Fletchers Solicitor’s Medical Negligence Serious Injury Solicitor, Alison Flaherty considers the latest study into stroke triggers is a timely reminder that healthy, hard-working people are also at potential risk.

Alison’s comments are in response to a new study by Paris’ Versailles Hospital that claims people who work 10-hour days every day for at least 10 years are more likely to suffer a stroke.

“Although concerning, the link between long working hours and a greater risk of a stroke is nothing new.

Research published in The Lancet back in August 2015 concluded that individuals who work 55 hours or more per week have a 1·3-times higher risk of a stroke incident than those working fewer hours.”

Alison Flaherty commented on the importance of recognising the signs of a stroke after he secured a seven-figure stroke-related settlement.

The settlement was a result of medical practitioners failing to refer a 50-year-old male for timely treatment.

Had they done so, it is likely he would not have suffered a stroke.

“It is important to see a medical practitioner immediately if any symptoms arise as early treatment can be crucial to help prevent or reduce the effects of a stroke.

“Recognising the FAST symptoms: Face, Arms, Speech, Time could aid in avoiding a poor outcome.”

Alison regularly acts on behalf of individuals that have suffered from the catastrophic effects of a stroke following medical negligence and believes that increasing stroke awareness is important.

“A stroke can have devastating consequences and rebuilding lives following such can be very challenging.”

Strokes are a life-threatening attack on the brain and happen when the bloody supply to a part of the brain is cut off.

Currently in the UK, there are 100,000 strokes every single year which equates to one every five minutes. Source, stroke.org.uk
