Blog: Financial Boost for NHS Artificial Intelligence

A few weeks on from my blog: Artificial Intelligence is helping to diagnose fractures, the NHS have announced that they will invest £250 million in AI in the health service.

A number of clinical trials show AI is as good as leading doctors in detecting lung and skin cancer on scans.

Furthermore, these trials show occasions where human assessment missed the same diagnosis carried out by AI.

The NHS now acknowledges that the use of AI in medicine could save lives and improve care. It has therefore chosen to substantially invest in developing and implementing new tools.

Health Secretary, Matt Hancock advised BBC News.

The power of artificial intelligence to improve medicine, to save lives, to improve the way treatments are done, that power is enormous.

In this country, we’ve got the opportunity to be one of the leading countries in the world at using this new technology.

The Health Secretary also acknowledged that AI can only ever be as good as the data it is provided.

Because of this, care must be taken to ensure the data is representative of society and beneficial for people of all ethnic backgrounds.
