The £1.6 million fine imposed on Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust following the avoidable deaths of three babies—Adele O’Sullivan, Kahlani Rawson, and Quinn Parker—marks a tragic milestone as the largest maternity-related penalty ever issued by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Yet, while this prosecution may represent a step forward in accountability, it is not enough to address the devastating impact on the affected families.

The trust admitted six counts of failing to provide safe care and treatment, a damning acknowledgment of the failures that led to these heartbreaking outcomes. The court heard how inadequate training, delays in care, and poor communication contributed to the tragedies, and the trust’s repeated failures have left families reeling with grief that will never fully heal.

No fine, however significant, can truly reflect the gravity of these losses or the suffering endured by those left behind. More concerning is that these financial penalties do not go to the affected families but are instead absorbed by the public purse—leaving many families feeling that justice remains out of reach.

The judge’s comments, expressing sympathy for the families and noting that the trust had “broken the system” meant to keep mothers and babies safe, highlight the immense responsibility now placed on NUH to drive meaningful change.
