Calls for Independent Review Following Tragic preventable Baby Deaths at Leeds NHS Hospitals.

Partner at Fletchers Solicitors, Francesca Paul, has expressed deep concern following the BBC’s recent investigation into the deaths of 56 babies and two mothers at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s University Hospital published on 17/01/25, calling for an independent review into the care provided by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTH).

The BBC’s findings reveal a series of potentially preventable deaths spanning from January 2019 to July 2024, raising serious questions about patient safety and care standards at the Trust. Many families impacted have described a ‘tick box’ culture and poor communication from staff, echoing the concerns of whistleblowers who have come forward to highlight systemic failings. These whistleblowers should be commended for their bravery in speaking out to ensure such issues are addressed and future harm is prevented.

The investigation uncovered that care issues, including delayed interventions and inadequate monitoring, were identified in internal reviews conducted by the Trust. However, the findings were not publicly disclosed until now, leaving many families unaware of the extent of the failings.

Getting some through and actionable outcomes as a result of the review implemented as quickly as possible could prevent future issues”
